2021 has been a year of contradictions. People worldwide are still greatly affected by the continued pandemic and the climate crisis. We all are learning how to deal with the impact these 2 major crises have on our lives, and especially those of the generations after us. It is clear that there is a disbalance of the current system and the way it exploits people and planet.
This has resulted in a growing awareness, need for change and an awakened sense of urgency. A need to restore the balance between give and take. To tackle today’s most challenging problems, and transform our economy, we need a radically different approach. We need to pioneer and find (new) financial instruments that can serve the new businesses and models that offer solutions for this.
This leads to a healthy project pipeline for TRMC and eagerness of like-minded parties to join forces and build partnerships.
This has been a big part of our work, leading to a number of new investments and donations. In the core of our work lies the continuous exploration of finding the appropriate financial instrument for certain initiatives. Being one of the reasons why we actively look for partnerships, in a search for blended finance.
Aiming for a sustainable and inclusive society for the generations to come, we (amongst others) made a donation to the Lab of The Futured Generations. The Lab experiments with the development of tools that guide governments and companies in their thinking about the long-term effects of their decisions on people who have yet to be born.
With Aardpeer, TRMC co-created (with 3 other partners) a movement to safeguard agricultural land (and soil vitality) for future generations. By issuing a first and a second Bond, of which the proceeds are used to extract agricultural land from the speculative market, we offer the farmers for the future access to affordable land and guarantee a healthy soil and food for the generations to come. This is a leverage point for the transition to a resilient natural capital environment.
Triodos Regenerative Money Centre reached its 2021 targets in terms of number of investments and donations as well as in terms of the innovative nature of the initiatives supported.Besides our continuous investment and donation activities we were able to formulate more clearly what Regenerative Money can contribute to today’s challenges, and where it is important for our common understanding of the role of money in today’s society. Regenerative Money has a true transformative power.
On a final note, 2021 was the year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Triodos Foundation. We took this opportunity to organize a panel discussion addressing the disbalance in today’s society that lead to inequality together with Triodos Bank.
