A Reference Point for Sustainable Banking

As well as deliver the benefits of sustainable banking directly through its finance, Triodos Bank promotes the idea that money can be used consciously through the banking system as a positive force for good, directly contributing to its strategic goal to act as a reference point for banking. This role is one its stakeholders value very highly and it remains a key strategic objective of the organisation.

During the year, Triodos Bank helped to launch the B Corporation in Europe, a certification body for companies who want to benefit society as well as investors. Triodos Bank itself became the first international bank to be a B Corporation in Europe.

Triodos Bank is a well-known name in the banking sector in Spain, built on a large and active online community, extensive media interest – resulting in 2,300 free publicity pieces during the year worth an equivalent of EUR 6 million – and active involvement in events and conferences on values based banking and sustainability. These events include opportunities for customers and co-workers to meet with borrowing customers. This outreach activity builds on practical innovations such as a Triodos Foundation (Triodos Fundacion) initiative to co-create an award-winning crowd funding platform for organic gardens in schools during the year.

In Germany, Triodos Bank supported the launch of the first label for Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) funds. This new quality standard has been developed by both financial experts and representatives from civil society. It will help provide stakeholders with clarity about the quality of the sustainable investment market.

In Belgium Triodos Bank was awarded the prestigious "Prize De Standaard La Libre Belgique for the best manager of a range of sustainable funds”, on the fifth successive occasion.

During the year the Dutch branch participated in a parliamentary round table on sustainable banking, emphasizing the importance of sustainable mortgages to reducing carbon. The branch again delivered its Heart Head Day, providing opportunities for savings and loans customers to meet throughout the Netherlands and including a special entrepreneur of the year prize voted for by Triodos Bank’s stakeholders.

Triodos Bank was a key sponsor of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital and actively participated in a range of activities and initiatives linked to the year. Towards the end of 2015 the bank acquired its UK head office in Bristol from its landlords, giving it greater flexibility with the space and a solid asset for the future.

All Triodos Bank’s branches participated in the second global day of values-based banking, part of a Global Alliance for Banking on Values’ initiative that engaged millions of people around the world. As well as mobilizing its online communities across all the countries where it operates, Triodos Bank CEO and Chair of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values Peter Blom was interviewed as part of a special Green Business Summit, in the UK to mark the initiative.
